The family motto of Philip Doddridge's ancestors was "whilst we live, let us live." Dear old Philip filled that motto with full meaning when he penned these lines alongside the family arms: -
"Live whilst you live," the Epicure would say,
And seize the pleasures of the present day.
"Live whilst you live," the sacred preacher cries,
And give to God each moment as it flies.
Lord, in my views, let both united be;
I live in pleasure whilst I live to Thee.
